Returns and failed deliveries

PostEx Returns Guide: How Return to Origin (RTO) Works

What happens when an online order cannot be delivered? This guide explains how PostEx returns work, how repeat delivery tries work, why returns happen and what buyers and sellers can do.

Independent Consumer Notice: postex-tracking.com is an independent guide. PostEx (Pvt.) Ltd. does not own or run it. We do not decide where returns go or set shops’ return policies. If your parcel was marked for return by mistake, contact PostEx support on (042) 111 786 227.

What a Return Means

In the courier world, Forward Logistics means moving an order from the seller’s warehouse to the buyer’s address. On the other hand, Reverse Logistics means sending a parcel that could not be delivered back from the buyer’s city to the seller.

When a parcel cannot be delivered in Pakistan, it is marked for Return to Origin (RTO). At PostEx, this is a set process for getting the seller’s goods back safely when delivery to the door is not possible.

Why Parcels Are Returned: Common Reasons

Parcels are not usually sent back without a reason. The most common ones are:

  • Repeated Consignee Unavailability: The rider came or called several times, but the phone was not answered or nobody was home.
  • Incomplete or Inaccurate Address: The label had no street name, the wrong house number or no landmark, so the rider could not find the address.
  • Customer Refusal at Doorstep: The buyer refused the parcel at the door, for example because it was ordered by mistake, ordered twice, arrived too late or there was no cash for COD.
  • Self-Cancelled Order: The buyer asked the shop to cancel the order after the parcel was already with PostEx.
  • Packaging Damage in Transit: If a parcel was badly damaged or leaking on the way, staff may stop it and send it back to the seller to be checked.

A Missed Delivery Is Not the Same as a Return

Many shoppers worry when they see a failed delivery in their tracking. But one failed delivery does not send the parcel straight back to the seller.

Temporary Delivery Exception

The status says “Consignee Unavailable” or “Attempt Rescheduled”. The parcel goes back to your local delivery station at the end of the day. It stays in your city and waits for another delivery try.

Returned to the seller (RTO)

The status says “RTO Initiated” or “Return to Origin”. After several failed tries, or a cancellation, the parcel leaves your local station and travels back towards the seller’s city.

For more about what each status means, read our PostEx tracking status meanings guide.

How a Return Travels, Step by Step

Once a parcel is marked as a return, it goes back like this:

  1. Step 1: Return starts: The local station changes the status to “Return to Origin (RTO) Initiated”. The delivery to you is now finished.
  2. Step 2: Travel back: The parcel is packed with other returns and taken by road back to the sorting hub in the seller’s city.
  3. Step 3: Back at the first hub: The hub scans the returns as they arrive, and tracking shows “Arrived at Origin Return Hub”.
  4. Step 4: Back with the seller: PostEx takes the parcel back to the seller’s warehouse. The status shows "Returned to Merchant", and the return is finished.

What Shoppers Should Do If an Order Is Returned

If your tracking shows a return, do the following, depending on your situation:

  • If you still want the item: Once a parcel is marked “Return to Origin Initiated”, the courier cannot turn it around and bring it to you. Contact the shop, explain that the delivery failed and ask them to send it again, with your correct phone number and full address.
  • If the return started too soon: If the rider marked you as unreachable without calling you, phone PostEx customer care straight away on (042) 111 786 227 with your tracking number. If the parcel has not left your city yet, they may be able to stop the return and try delivery again.
  • If you paid in advance: If you paid online by card instead of cash on delivery, ask the shop for your refund. PostEx does not give refunds to shoppers.

For Sellers: Keeping an Eye on Returns

For online sellers in Pakistan, keeping returns low is an important part of running the business:

  • Dashboard Monitoring: Sellers can follow parcels that are coming back in the PostEx Business Suite, so they know what stock is on the way.
  • Return Verification: When returns arrive, the warehouse team checks the seal and barcode to make sure the goods came back safely before adding them back to stock.
  • Customer Re-Engagement: Good sellers read the notes on failed deliveries (such as a wrong address or a buyer asking for weekend delivery) and contact the buyer to book the order again.
